Your out-of-office message is already written. Your hands just don't know it yet.

Somewhere between a lush Hawaiian landscape and a handmade island mug, there is a version of you that is deeply, profoundly covered in clay — and could not be happier about it. That version of you is waiting. This retreat is how you get there.

Join us for a 5-day off-grid pottery retreat on the Big Island of Hawaii, where the emails can't reach you, the views are intoxicating, and the only agenda is making things with your hands, eating well, and remembering what it feels like to slow down on purpose.

🌺 March 14-18, 2027 at Terracotta Makuʻu, on the Big Island of Hawaii

What to expect:

Day 1 — Arrive & Unwind
Settle into the studio, meet your fellow retreaters, and take your first real breath in what might be months. We'll do a gentle intro to hand-building and get your hands into clay for the first time — no pressure, no perfection, just presence. Evening: communal dinner under the stars.

Day 2 — Build
Morning session on the wheel or hand-building, your choice. We will take a break and head to the Maku'u Farmers Market for lunch and inspiration, before returning for open studio time to experiment, explore textures, and make whatever the island is whispering to you. (Spoiler: it's probably a bowl. The island loves a bowl.) Evening: sunset, snacks, and good conversation.

Day 3 — Glaze & Fire
Learn surface decorating techniques with your creations and pre-made stoneware, find your own textures in the landscape, and prep your pieces for drying and firing. Watch the kiln do its slow, dramatic magic. Afternoon: We'll provide a ride and snorkel gear for anyone interested in a trip to the Hilo Farmers Market for lunch and snorkeling at our favorite secret beach.

Day 4 — The Island is Calling
Today the itinerary dissolves and the Big Island takes over as your only plan. Sleep past sunrise if your body asks for it. Wander down a path you haven’t taken yet and see where it goes. Let the trade winds do what they’ve always done — move through everything, carry the smell of ginger and salt and something you can’t name but will remember for years. Swim in water so clear it doesn’t look real. Lie in a hammock and watch the light change through the canopy, which it will do approximately seventeen times before noon and each time will be different and each time will be worth looking at. Or slip back into the studio, because the clay is still there and you’re not done with it yet and that is a completely valid way to spend a free day and we will not judge you even a little. This day is yours. The island has been waiting to show you something. All you have to do is let it.

Day 5 — Unload & Celebrate
The kiln reveal — the most exciting moment in pottery, full stop. Unload your finished pieces, photograph everything, and wrap up with a closing circle and a meal worth remembering. You'll leave with your work, your new skills, and approximately zero desire to go back to your inbox.
