Terracotta Pullman
Wheel Wednesdays: July 2-23 -- Pullman
Wheel Wednesdays: July 2-23 -- Pullman
We're inviting our young artists to take our wheels for a spin on Wednesdays this July!
We’re learning how to center, throw, trim, add handles and more in this 5-week wheel workshop. This workshop is offered just once in the summer-- July 2-23 --with a morning, early afternoon and late afternoon time slot available.
Just six seats available in each time slot.
This workshop is taught with hands-on instruction by Terracotta studio owner and founder Candace Baltz. Candace first learned to throw on the wheel as a tween, and enjoys passing down this ancient art form to our next generation.
Each week, students will spend about 90 minutes throwing on the wheel, plus:
Week One: Tweens and kids will learn the basics of pottery and become oriented to the studio and how to use our tools, equipment and share a community space. Students will learn to wedge clay and begin throwing on the wheel, aiming to create one bowl they would like to keep and work on the following week when they begin to learn trimming. (July 2)
Week Two: Students will spend their day throwing on the wheel, aiming to create two to four bowls they would like to keep. Students will also learn to trim, using the bowl they created the week before. (July 9)
Week Three: Students will resume their work from the week before, paying special attention to finishing touches, adding handles, and preparing their pottery for the drying process. Students will throw on the wheel, aiming to create two to four pieces they would like to keep, including one piece that could be used as a mug. (July 16)
Week Four: Students will resume their work from the week before, paying special attention to finishing touches, adding handles, and preparing their pottery for the drying process. Students will throw on the wheel, aiming to create two to four pieces which are taller than the pieces they've made before. (July 23)
Week Five: Students will glaze their creations. If students are able to complete the glazing process, they can spend the remainder of their time on the wheel throwing what they would like, with instructional support form the terracotta team. (July 30)
Prices include all instruction, clay, tools, kiln firing, and dip glazing. Pottery is generally ready to glaze two weeks after creating, and ready to take home one week after glazing. Kids need to be at least 5' tall and physically able to reach the center of the wheel while sitting on the pottery stool. Due to the limited space and time, make-ups are unavailable for missed classes.
